Hummingbird at backyard feeder

I’ve asked this question before in workshops, but this afternoon I was struck again with its significance.

You know how you feel on Monday morning when you get up to go to work? What about when you wake up on Friday morning? Do you feel different? Suppose you didn’t know what day it was — would you know how to feel?

I took this afternoon off from writing the proposal, and just sat out back. I put on my ipod and earphones, watched the orioles and hummingbirds at the feeder and in the birdbath, delighted in the cool breeze between my toes and vegged out. And I was totally in the peace of the afternoon, until I remembered that tomorrow is Monday. What difference should that have made? Nothing else had changed but suddenly I was in “Sunday evening mode”. You’re probably familiar with Sunday evening mode when it’s hard to escape the fact that whatever you said you’d accomplish over the weekend may not have been accomplished yet.
I know better, and I did it anyway — for 10 minutes. Then I thought, “Sunny, you teach this stuff. The least you could do is be present in Sunday afternoon while it’s still Sunday afternoon.” So I did, until 5:00. And then I went in and made a To Do List for tomorrow. Progress is a wonderful thing.  😉

When I’m sitting in the sun with my eyes closed I could be anywhere and feel like I’m on vacation. I love doing it on my porch and saving all that gas money.

Especially in the spring with all that gorgeous forsythia around you!

What a great reminder to be present!

Sometimes Justin and I would get the profound grumpies and we just couldn’t attribute it to anything – until we realized they always came on Sunday night. We both work at home on Mondays so now the grumpies seemed to have moved their ETA to Monday nights, lol.

Good morning. This is my first blog on any site any where. I am so familiar with Sunday evening mode that I find I don’t want to be anywhere else but at home on Sunday night – just to get things ready for the week. I actually like Sunday nights. I’m jumping into a whole new set of modes though – and this is really my first day. I’m nearing my 50th birthday (May is big for me too), I’m leaving a career I’ve had for 20 years later this month and and in my second year of grad school. Our daughter is graduating from high school on June 1 and heads for the northwest for college in September. And I find an amazing desire to clean out stuff -today, almost like I don’t need to have it around any more. Feels like change is afoot! Thanks for listening. dk

Jamie, how funny that you’ve named them! Now you can dress them up and trot them out for good conversation on Monday evenings.

dk — welcome and congratulations on your first post! It definitely sounds as though things are moving for you, and all at the same time. Happy 50th, and enjoy the clean-out phase. 🙂
