Field of Dreams - 2006 May (6) by Rock Chalk Jayhawk Cartographer.

I loved the movie Field of Dreams. It spoke directly to where I was at the time, and still leaves me feeling hopeful when life becomes frustrating. But let’s face it, just building something may not be enough to guarantee visitations. Take websites for example. When I first developed a web presence 10 years ago it was still pretty much of a novelty. I spent a lot of time deciding what image I needed to project, and it was definitely less about me and more about “company attractiveness”. I had to appeal to my audience at the time which was primarily corporate.

Now I find myself playing on a different field, so to speak. I can embrace my authenticity fully and I need to do exactly that. I hired Colleen Wainwright to poke around my site in order to discover what makes me, me, and her feedback was fascinating and wonderful. She said, “You need to showcase your words and heart.” Wow – someone I respect gave me permission to do that! I was so used to focusing on the more technical aspects that I missed that emphasis entirely.

So I’m building again. Of course today’s tools include things like active social networking which didn’t exist when I started out and I now know is a significant factor in increasing site traffic. But most important is knowing how to present who you really are and how to value the relationships that develop as a result of that. Thank you, Colleen, for helping me to translate some dreams into reality.
